  Murukan 35 years old,...

Murukan 35 years old, a Thiruvananthapuram native, sometimes seen naked and always hyperactive. Murukan celebrates freedom of the nature, but is not acceptable to the modern society. There are many like Murukan in the city. They are inadaptable to the society. The society is an alien world to them. But, they are part of the human society. They are also heirs of human rights; rights for descent clothing, hygienic life, healthy food, secure shelter, and social acceptance. One day, the messengers of Santhi Mandiram met Murukan in the city. They were there to bring back the real freedom to Murukan; the freedom of being the civilized human being. They brought Murukan tied to Santhi Mandiram by an autoriksha. The temporary ties were removed and was released Murukan to the world of human rights. He had a lavish aromatic bath; he felt as transisted when with a tidy hair dressing. He felt human in his new clothing and accommodation. Now, Murukan enjoys love of friends, parents, nurses and also the normal life styles. He enjoys music, chats, entertainments, prayers and works. He shall be brought back to the normal human life and behavior completely, through scientific treatment. Santhi Mandiram is badly in need of the support from the well wishers, benefactors, and philanthropists for fulfillment of its mission.

People who are mentally retarded stand as an unsolved question before the mankind. They feed themselves on waste food particles, they put on torn out rugs and they sleep on the streets. Santhi Mandiram is a centre to rehabilitate these kinds of people. It is a registered charitable trust with the recognition of social welfare department of Kerala. There are 5 male volunteers and 1 lady chef in the kitchen. The centre accommodates 89 inmates now.

Our attempts are to transform people who are in uncivilized condition into civilized condition by providing proper bathing, clothing, food and treatment. The people we find have no names, addresses and relatives. They are unknown to their ill destiny. Day and nights are not separated before them. The world and its factors are wrongs for them. They have been forgotten by themselves for unknown reasons. We are with the conviction of bringing these people back to the normal human life through scientific treatments and spiritual practices. We are happy to say that 29 inmates are taken back home by their relatives after complete cure. Santhi Mandiram takes care of 12 destitute patients in 9th ward at Thiruvanthapuram General Hospital at the request of the Government. www.santhimandiram.com is the extended right hand of Santhi Mandiram for help.

  Sponsorships

Persons with disabilities, especially mentally challenged persons, even today continue to be one of the most disadvantaged groups in all societies. They are oppressed and ostracized without any exception of religion, caste, colour or language. In spite of their limitations they are subjected to social discrimination, lack of opportunities and impoverished educational and social experiences. In the rural areas, this is very conspicuous by the absence of services. Our task ahead is to work towards creating a more just and flexible social order in which persons with disabilities too can live with dignity and self-esteem. The sole aim of Santhi Mandiram is liberation and empowerment, liberating disabled people from the shackles of rejection and helplessness. SANTHI MANDIRAM will certainly be a beacon of light for persons with mental retardation, Santhi Mandiram means "the abode of peace" and this centre is determined to provide the best sevices to persons with disabilities especially mentally chellenged people.
